Posted at 07/08/2017

....The Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet will enrich its multi-content program with another gem of opera art, the three-act opera "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini. The premiere of the performance will take place on July 29.

Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, the director of the production, admitted at a meeting with journalists on July 28 that he is a little worried, because the Yerevan Opera House has a strong history, where working is a great pleasure and responsibility. "I don't know any theater where there are five performers of Turandot, and this theater has them. it's fantastic. Theaters dream of at least one performer of Turandot, and in Yerevan there are such diamonds, a whole group of artists with wonderful voices. All of them are interesting, bright and amazing," the director emphasized.

He believes that the direction should never cover the music, but should emphasize the work of the composer, the classical history through modern and bright technologies. "We see how multimedia, light and other technologies are developing, but our task was not to change the classical context of the story and to create a performance that will be interesting to the modern audience," said Starodubtsev.

The director managed to watch parts of some performances of the Yerevan Opera House. "It is a great happiness to listen and watch the "Spartak" ballet in the homeland of the bearer of that musical culture," he said.

Musical director and conductor of the performance Karen Durgaryan assured that quite serious work was done. the costumes are quality, the performance is rich. "Thank you to Vyacheslav and his team. They can show you how to work professionally. There are areas where we fall short and we shouldn't be afraid to speak up and fix the gaps. This period is important for us. our colleagues, our young forces can learn, which will help not only to maintain the performance, but also to achieve success in the next performances and form our working team. I hope the audience will like the performance, which is bright and bright," emphasized Karen Durgaryan.

Conductor Harutyun Arzumanyan considers all Puccini's operas to be masterpieces, but he singles out the opera "Turandot" among his great legacy, which the composer did not finish. It was completed by his associate and student, Alfano. Only the part written by Puccini was included in the Yerevan production. "It is a complex opera. Unlike Puccini's other operas, which have little chorus involvement, Turandot is choral-based. The director has staged it in such a way that the choir works actively and interestingly. The artists of the choir perform a complex role, playing and being an important part of the action," the conductor emphasized and considered it a pleasure to work on a genius work, the only concert performance of which was in the Yerevan theater.

The performance was brought to life with the support of the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. According to Alfred Kocharyan, deputy minister of the RA KGSMS, "Turandot" is one of the best operas, and every theater strives to include it in its repertoire. Kocharyan emphasized that the ministry supports such initiatives and has provided around 50 million drams for the implementation of "Turandot". "Such high-quality performances enrich our society, convey new spiritual charges, raise the level of society's perception of art and stimulate tourist flows to our country," emphasized Kocharian.

The deputy minister said that their goal is to maximally diversify the cultural life in Armenia and become the cultural and entertainment center of the region.

The world premiere of the opera about the love story of Princess Turandot and Calaf took place in 1926 at the La Scala Theater in Milan, after which it spread to the most prestigious concert halls and theaters around the world. Calaf is a young prince who tries to win the heart of Princess Turandot, which he succeeds in doing.

The "Turandot" performance of the Yerevan Opera House includes both famous and young soloists of the theater, the theater's choir, and the symphony orchestra.

The production was performed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, an honored artist of the Russian Federation, candidate of arts, chief director of the Novosibirsk State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet, acting rector of the Novosibirsk State Conservatory, the author of the beautiful sets and luxurious costumes was Pyotr Okunev, the chief designer of the Primorsky stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, and the costumes made by "Gabajyan Fashion House". The lighting director of the performance is Sergey Skornetsky, and the video content director is Vadim Dulenko.
